Ordering No More Mr. Nice-guy on-line.

 

Recently Shopify, the on-line sales platform that I was using triggered a pop up window when I would open my account on their site.

 

They demanded that I send scans of various identification including the information pages of my passport, drivers’ license and Social Insurance Card.

 

Of course I questioned this as it is extremely unwise considering the number of financial institutions and other major holders of personal data that have been hacked and the data stolen and used for nefarious purposes.

 

My contact with Shopify resulting in their revelation that they could not guarantee the security of the data.  Non-the-less they insisted that I provide the data as it was part of the terms of service from when I opened the account 1 ½ years ago.

 

They confirmed they have no legal basis for wanting the information, simply that their partner, Wells Fargo, a US based bank, and other partners required it.

 

It seems that the thousands of people who use Shopify have released their most personal data to them; I will not.

 

In response they froze my account and refused to release the money in the account.

 

I refunded the most recent book purchases to the persons making the orders though the books were shipped, and closed my account.  Trusting that they will e-transfer the purchase price when they receive the refund.
